Upcoming Changes to Right to Choose Referrals for ADHD and Autism
NHS Kent and Medway has announced plans to improve ADHD and autism assessment services across the area, in response to a significant rise in demand for diagnostic assessments and support.
The increasing number of referrals for ADHD and autism assessments has placed considerable pressure on local NHS services, leading to longer waiting times. To address this, NHS Kent and Medway is working with service providers to develop a more streamlined and effective pathway for patients who may require assessment and treatment.
Proposed improvements include:
- A screening or triage assessment to help identify those who meet the clinical threshold for a full diagnostic assessment.
- A clearer and more coordinated pathway from GP referral through to specialist services.
- Better communication about waiting times and referral progress.
- Increased access to support for people experiencing neurodevelopmental difficulties, even before a formal diagnosis is made.
NHS Kent and Medway has stated that these changes aim to ensure that people with the greatest clinical need can access assessments while also providing broader support for individuals who may be affected by ADHD, autism, or other neurodevelopmental conditions. This does mean that waiting times may be longer than they have been in recent times.
